Backing up Your Records
It struck me recently that DJs lose their records more often than one might have thought. First was a local DJ whose car was broken into in Birmingham, then I heard of an international DJ whose records disappeared during a trip to the Far East. Stories then emerged of the same thing happening to Sasha.
As a DJ’s records are their livelihood, I presumed they must make sure they have back-ups. How wrong was I! Just like the rest of us they often “don’t have time”. Well it’s January now and there’s a lull in clubbing nationwide, so make time and, if you’re one of those DJs who’s jetting off for gigs in Australia, or Timbuktu, then maybe it’s even more appropriate for you get those favourite bits of vinyl backed up to CD. A belt and braces alternative is to also store your backups on the web, so that even if the vinyl and the CDs get lost or are stolen, you can access your fave tunes from anywhere in the world and burn some replacements.

Two Reviews both of Action & Trade
Yes this week we have two reviews provided by two separate people who both went to the same two clubs, and wrote about them. Interesting to compare two people’s perspectives on the same night out.
Review No. 1 of Action & Trade
by Ken
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Action was very good…although it opened later than advertised, midnight was handled very well, a subtle blending of dj/music/glitter drop rather than an enforced pa countdown, and it did not get really busy til about 2am…many arrived after having their own NY at home or parties and then going clubbing…and even had space to dance! They introduced a second laser in the overspill/chill area that was very effective. However it took a bit of a downturn when Gonzalo came on (3rd set)…he spent a noticeably lot of time rummaging in his record box and even less time playing my idea of decent music! It goes that way sometimes.
A happy vibe and Action gave the same format as usual…not pretending to reinvent the number of djs in a night or anything else…and as a result worked as compared to Universe last year which didn’t!
Looking through QX at the listings and the paucity of available new year venues, I hope that the ones that did try to do sensible things got rewarded for their efforts and no doubt mega-increased rents by the money-grabbers…and wonder who (in their right minds) went to the NYE at the Fort?! {exploding your thong in the cold in tune to Big Ben is an option only to be considered by the well hung or well twatted!}
Trade was also very good…although got the impression that the music was not really going anywhere other than octane level…and was surprised that although it was busy it was not unpleasant or overcrowded. I was expecting shoulder-to-shoulder and shaven chest-to-shaven chest [Muscle Maries velcro’ed together to keep their combined brain cell intact] but instead you could move around in relative comfort and even get a cool draft at the back end of the dancefloor – the heating was still kept on though as normal! – no doubt to maintain the £2.50 water sales? Methinks the club also did well on the ticket sales – most people I knew or spoke to were aware of others with tickets who were not coming for various reasons.
Review No. 2 of Action & Trade
by Rudehamster
I thought you might be interested in a breakdown of the Rudehamster New Year experience.
First off: Action.
Not bad at all. We’ve all had fairly shitty New Year’s in clubs in the past, where the atmosphere hasn’t been quite what we would like it to have been – this has often been because too many people have been squashed into a small space, making the first eight hours unbearable.
Despite it being very busy at Action, there was enough room to move around…apart from where the muscle-marys were rooted to the spot with k – not a pretty sight, and impossible to move through. Action were still selling tickets at the door, and many people were still arriving at 2am. I think this was the theme throughout the scene this year…private parties and maybe a club afterwards. I say maybe, because we spoke to a fair number who had members of their party who had stayed at home, despite buying a ticket.
The music is a problem at Action – the atmosphere is always good, but the music is often disjointed and never seems to take off in an upwards direction. It remains fairly constant throughout. Again, this plays to the ketamine crowd (which makes up a large percentage), but wading through twenty minutes of miserable thumping before an uplifting melody rears its head, becomes a little tedious.
The biggest culprit for this is Gonzalo (but certainly not the only one): a man who plays each set with as little effort as possible, and with no little or no vision as to where he wishes to go with the set. He is named ‘super-dj’ in QX…with no irony either, which is a worry.
Trade was busy, but not as busy as it has been in previous years. Noteable that they didn’t open every room (falling ticket sales, or general apathy?) and that, although there were a lot of faces I knew, it was more the people that weren’t there that stood out. One thing that I really didn’t understand though, was why the music hit peak speed at 11am when there was still 7 hours left. In previous years, Trade had kep the music relatively downbeat specifically to keep people from getting too tired to quickly. Pacing seemed to have gone out the window this year, which resulted in a lot of people leaving because they were burned out.
The best set of the night? Well, that was easily a Paul Newman cd at the chill-out. Tall Paul (along with Alan Thompson, Craig Daniels, Malcolm Duffy and the late TDV) has his roots in disco and early house. His sets are creative and he has never been afraid of trying out new things. There is a definite art in taking a dancefloor on a journey…and an even greater art in bringing them back: perhaps Gonzalo would like to borrow the CD?

CLUB INFO AND REVIEWS Sundissential, Birmingham, Moving – to “Pulse”. Birmingham’s hard dance community was rocked recently when Sundissential announced that the venue it had recently moved to only a few weeks before, Cobarna, was closing and that it had to move yet again. Here’s their official announcement. Note that the previously advertised event due for 17th. January is not taking place and the first SS event in 2004 will now be on January 24th. Sundissential WE ARE COMING HOME!!! Its been a very eventful week at Sundissential towers our feet have not touched the ground after being informed that the future of Cobarna as a nightclub was not stable and was due to close, Sundissential again had a feeling of homelessness ..UNTIL THEN!!We have secured our most exciting move yet! Sundissential has got its self its very OWN CLUB! Almost 4 years to the day Sundissential is making a return to its roots – In exactly the same location as the infamous Pulse, so it is appropriately being named: PULSE 2 !!!Pulse 2 is an amazing new venue that will now host the UKs NO 1 Club Sundissential & Funkissential Weekly Saturdays!!!The entrance for PULSE 2 is on Small Brook Queensway in the heart of Birmingham’s city centre PULSE 2 is under the umbrella of Zanzibar although it is a totally separate club PULSE 2 runs down all of the right hand side of the original PULSE and Central Park, Zanzibar and PULSE 2 are 2 completely separate venues with no contact or clash between the two, the venue entrance leads down a pink stairway directly to the Pink Room, the Pink Room is the perfect place for Funkissential. It is off course pink, plush and very funky with a central positioned DJ box a big wooden dance floor, excellent lights & sound, carpeted surrounding areas and comfy booths of seating all around. This arena will KICK OFF!!!Then you can head down the red corridor that takes you straight to the Oasis The Oasis room has a dark tropical feel with waterfalls on the walls and lower ceilings, the DJ box again is in a fantastic place being central in the room on level with the dancefloor with a big wooden dancefloor all around and again carpeted surrounding areas, monster sound system and excellent lights Sundissential will be rocking this room week in week out, there is also comfy seating booths all around!! The toilets are huge and very plush PULSE 2 has both unisex and single sex toilets and lots of bars throughout the whole venue. The venue is almost one of the most perfectly suited places we have ever been in and so we are now putting all our efforts into the launch of our new home PULSE 2! Because of the short space of time we will move the FREE members party to a date in the near future, the open forum meeting will also be moved, so we have a few weeks at our new home before our members hit us with their feedback! We launch on January 24th – with the worlds biggest DJ! Sundissential Arena: Eddie Halliwell Steve Thomas (original pulse classics set) Ian M Strange Dave Andy WhitbyFunkissential Arena: Wez Marx Rui Maos Clinton ShaweThis is one of the best things to happen to Sundissential and certainly the best thing to happen to Birmingham!! ** Photos of PULSE 2 to follow**Bring It On!!!See you there,Danny, Louise, Helen, Strange Dave, Ben & SJ xxxxxMore interestingly perhaps, here’s yet more evidence that clubland is suffering badly with more venues closing, (Cobarna in Birmingham, Camden Palace and The Fridge in London), while others scramble to get club promoters to hold their events at their premises.Over the past few months Sundissential has been experiencing a roller-coaster of a ride, much of it downwards: Sundissential North, Leeds – Formerly at Evolution, then due to move to Heaven & Hell but currently closed. Funkissential Leeds – transformed into “Kiss Da Funk” run by the same people, (Rob Tissera and Tolley), at the same venue, but under a new name without Sundissential being involved. Funkissential Birmingham – Formerly at Kudos on Fridays but now closed. Afterssential, Birmingham – The re-opening at 9Bar has been repeatedly delayed for various reasons. Last was it would be re-opening on 24th. January. Fingers crossed? Everything is now riding on making a success of their Birmingham operations, with weekly events at the new venue and occasional specials at The Works. The critical thing about the latter is the size of the venue, which has got to pull in at least 1,200 people to create a decent atmosphere. The New Year’s Day event at The Works was a success, but can this be replicated during the course of 2004? The jury’s still out on that one. Next big event at The Works is scheduled for Sunday 29th. February. What’s special about that date in the clubbing calendar, (apart from it comes around once every four years)? Beats me.Meantime the competition are just licking their chops and making life more difficult. Blu/Afters are getting their act together at Subway City with ever more appealing line-ups, while God’s Kitchen’s Polysexual, fronted by “Uncle Madders”, and with their money, are promising some spectacular events at Air. Rumour had it that Madders’ last little idea was to offer free Polysexual memberships to anyone willing to hand in their Sundissential membership card. Ouch! But the main competitors to Sundissential’s crown, nationally, now seem to be Tidy with their increasingly slick and corporate organisation, creating the same atmosphere of mad fun at their events which at one time Sundissential seemed to have a monopoly on.Nevertheless, the enthusiasm of the clubbers on the Sunnies board is undiminished. “Return to Pulse. Yipee!!!”, though most were never there in the first place, and what they’re “returning” to isn’t actually the original club, at best just part of it. Strange really that the “return” date is almost four years to the day since the death of Robert Lowe at the original Pulse venue. There’s also talk on the Sunnies web board of the return of the “old Pulse crowd” reflecting a rather touchingly naive belief that the clubbers of four plus years ago have just been biding their time until Sunnies got sorted out. Those people have GONE, just as in a year or two, these will have too. Straight clubbers have a relatively short lifespan, and need to be constantly replaced. There’s a lot riding on this move, and many people will be hoping against hope that it works for Sundissential this time because it’s unlikely to be able to survive if it doesn’t. Fingers crossed!——————————————————————————–The Fridge, Brixton, London, to Close. London clubbing institution, The Fridge, looks set to close at the end of this month, (see Logic announcement in Forthcoming Events below). Rumours are circulating the message boards that it been purchased by the promoter of London gay clubs Beyond, Orange, and others, but as yet there’s no official announcement from either the venue or the potential buyer. The Fridge has played host to numerous clubs of significance in London over the years, not to mention many live bands, and has been a mainstay of the hard dance crowd there. A converted cinema, it was not a huge favourite of mine but represented one of the small number of large-scale venues operating in London. This sale, coming on the heels of the closure of a similar such venue, Camden Palace, has left London hard dance scene somewhat shocked, and, for many, dismayed. Whether it continues as a clubbing venue will give some indication as to the health or otherwise of clubbing in the capital. Stay posted.——————————————————————————–Milk, London, Moving For those of you who don’t read the national press, or watch the tv news bulletins, we have a special surprise. * Milk is moving to Studio 33 in Vauxhall from the 24th January. This, for me at least, is a double-edged sword * 414 has been a wonderful home for the last two and a half years and I will miss it and the staff more than words can say. It is, however, time to move on, and having been to Studio 33 for Tilt a couple of times I am very impressed. We have the use of the main two rooms enabling us to give you the hard dance you have come to expect in the main room but allowing us to provide a more experimental edge in the second room. I will say no more other than come along and see for yourselves.——————————————————————————– Note of a New Night in Nottingham from DJ Jukesy For those that remember the good old days at the old corporation in Sheffield I think you should consider paying a visit to Rock City in Nottingham, this venue brings back many happy memories of the old corp. Its got that cheeky underground feeling to a club that made events at the old corporation so good, loads of hiding places in the main room and a thunderous sound system to lose it to banging music, in the 2nd room its got a really low ceiling and another thunderous sound system, it really has got to be seen. There will be various massive line ups over the coming months from Frontiers of Sound, based in the central location of Nottingham its easy to get to from anywhere in the country and with a lack of Sunday events at the moment this is definitely worth a try, you wont be disappointed.[Info on this event is included in the Forthcoming events section below, Jonathan]JP & Jukesy’s label: www.deprivationrecords.co.ukDeprivation Recordings was formed in September 2003 by a partnership involving three people Jon Paul Montgomery (JP) , Adam Jukes (Jukesy) and Ben Hardy. Their aim is to provide another solid hard label for the hardhouse scene and to bring in some of the best known producers and also some of the brightest up and coming producers on the scene. Both JP and Jukesy have been making headway into the hardhouse circuit as up and coming DJs for the last year and a half. After their first successful releases on Passion Records, How I feel and H-Bomb (supported by DJs like Eddie Halliwell and Amber D) they have decided to launch their own label with the help of their good friend Ben. All three of them have come from a clubbing background (with JP & Jukesy going to places like Sundissential at Pulse and Ben starting out clubbing at nights like Atomic Jam – so expect a thrashing of techno on the label too!) their love for hard music has always been there. This is also another foray into the dance scene for Ben, having successfully run a club night and helped run one of the first clubbing coach companies. They have now joined forces to try and become one of the most respected and best hardhouse labels. This will take time, but with the things they have lined up it’s going to be an interesting ride, so just sit back and wait for the releases. Current & future releases Deprivation 1 JP & Jukesy vs Sam Hudson The Hustler with a Defective Audio remix Now released and has been receiving plays from DJS like Paul Glazby, Andy Farley, Anne Savage, Justin Bourne, Nick Rafferty, Amber D etc etc Deprivation 2 JP & Jukesy Gollum with a Justin Bourne & Dynamic Intervention remix Massive remix from Justin and Mik and this remix will feature on the forthcoming Nukleuz Hardhouse Anthems 5 CD, Due for release on Jan 26th 2004 Deprivation 3 Testube Babies vs Casper Bass Heavy with antimatter remix(Cyber Steve & Casper) A couple of exclusives on this release, this is the first collaboration between 2 of the scenes rising production stars and on remix duty it will also see the first remix release by antimatter, a fusion of hardhouse and techno this remix does the business due out March 2004Deprivation 4 – Daley, Adz & Calver More Drugs which will be getting the remix treatment from Tidys very own Tara Reynolds due out April 2004 ——————————————————————————– Reviews of Lashed and Trade Xmas and NYD by Bosch Lashed was rammed – packed in like sardines but production and crowd were tops. Music was good but again we were treated to the likely suspects behind the decks. Lashes played a particularly good set. I have not always been a fan of Lashes but I think she is truly starting to shine. Glazby was ok as were all the other DJs ie Tidy Boys, Farley, Neal Appeal & A*. The only grumble would be Rob Tissera – set all over the place with dodgy mixing. I have to say after hearing this DJ several times I am not a fan. All in all a top night, fab atmosphere but the usual recipe with the same old ingredients. No offence meant.Trade, mmm – Xmas Night better than NYD. Very busy at Xmas with a fairly weak but effective lineup. Duffy, Wayne G, Gonzalo & Wardman. Music relied heavily on classics but it worked. Not usually a fan of classic nights but Wardman saved the day with hard bouncy stuff that I was not familiar with. The thing with Trade is you hear a different kind of HardHouse to anywhere else. That’s why I can’t understand why on NYD they had BK & Rachel Auburn. BK may be a good producer but his set was god damn awful. Not very Trade and the usual dirge you will hear at most HH nights. Auburn, great producer but technically as a DJ struggles. I left thru out her set. Trade has become a very mainstream gay club. The crowd on NYD was odd. Whereas several years ago you would have clubbers that would go to Heaven & not Trade or GAY & not Trade now they all seem to go Trade. Fairly busy but not as prev years but generally not a crowd you would expect at Trade. Something I have not yet managed to put my finger on. It also appeared to empty out quickly. Muscle alley was testosterone free from 2pm onwards…Why Trade do not have EJ Doubell, Steve Thomas, Ian M I will never know. Unfortunately, we can chase the holy grail @ Turnmills but I don’t think we will ever get it. FORTHCOMING EVENTS LAST EVER MILK AT 414, Coldharbour Lane, Brixton, LONDON SW9 – from 6.30am – 2pm SATURDAY MORNING 17th January We at Milk will all be more than a little dewy-eyed this week as it’s our last ever party at Club 414, the place we’ve seen as our spiritual home since July 2001. This place has stamped its indelible mark across the hard dance scene of London over the years and we’ve had a fantastic two and a half years there. However, a change is as good as a rest, and we’re certainly not slackers – hence the move onwards and upwards to our new home at Studio 33 in Vauxhall next week (24th Jan). It marks the beginning of a new chapter in our history and we look forward to welcoming you to our future. Meanwhile, this is your LAST CHANCE EVER to experience MILK at Club 414, so if you want one more trip down memory lane, or haven’t been and don’t want to miss being a part of history, or even if you don’t know what day it is, who you are, or what on earth you’re doing wandering down Coldharbour Lane at 6 o’clock on a Saturday morning, just come on down to help us celebrate the end of an era in style! Milk residents D’Marr Ford, Dave Holmes, George & Jacob Moss will be writing the final musical score of our Symphonia Brixtonia with an uplifting blend of party techno, hardhouse and trance, while the svelte and ever-smiling Milk crew (yes, even Roger!) will be pampering you with free fruit, icepops and cutting sarcasm to make your day bewilderingly enjoyable. Everyone still standing at 2pm this Saturday will be given FREE ENTRY to our launch party at Studio 33, so even if you’re not out on Friday night you can always pop in for one last celebratory lunchtime drink and boogie with us. And finally, we’d like to take this opportunity to say a huge THANK YOU to all at Club 414 for their support and encouragement over the last 30 months – Tony & Louise for allowing us to party in their home very week; Steve, Niall and the security team for looking after us all and posing in black; Sybil, Luciana and all the bar staff for their patience and good humour; Saga for being Saga, and indeed everyone else in the extended family that is the 414. Our first ever party at Camden Palace was back in April 1999 when the queue stretched from the front doors round the block and back again with 2000 people already inside and 1500 desperately trying to buy tickets. Since then Camden Palace has turned into our spiritual home with over 70 events being held during the Daytime, Nighttime,Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays! We are holding 2 last parties so we can play the biggest range of our favourite DJs possible and because we know that not everybody will be able to make the first party in January. Come and say goodbye to the Palace at the last ever Frantic parties? at the legendary venue! CLUB INFO AND REVIEWS Preview: Release Released! Sunday Nights @ The Nightingale, Birmingham This Sunday, (8th. February), marks the re-opening of Release, Andy Farley’s new weekly club night / post gig party, which he’s putting on with fellow DJ residents Sarah G. and Si Griffiths in Birmingham. As it’s the 2004 Opening, and in true party spirit, they’ve decided to make entry FREE! I recall having a discussion on Harder Faster not long ago with someone about the difference between a “venue”, a “club” and a “party”, and wondered why in London lots of clubs are called parties. In many cases that doesn’t seem very appropriate, especially when clubs get big and commercial. However, Release is really best described as a party – end of the weekend where Andy and mates play a variety of quality dance music from tribal through tech house to techno, and covering, as they see fit and feel inclined, everything in between. In some sense this is quite a remarkable event, as this is just what lots of kids do at the weekend – have a party, and get on the decks with mates. That Farley wants to do this having been playing all over the country, (he’s playing a God’s Kitchen event in Liverpool, and Afters in Birmingham this weekend) is probably a testament to the kid in him, and to the fact that international fame, (he’s just come back from a tour of Australia), hasn’t dulled his enthusiasm for the scene nor has he lost his understanding of what it’s all about. The name of the club, Release, is also quite appropriate. It’s for those who are Released from the pre-conceptions of what Andy Farley plays, (i.e. Andy Farley = Hard House, NOT!, well not at Release). The closest thing to which I can liken the style of the music is Trade as it used to be a few years ago, but such comparisons are odious to some and perhaps irrelevant. It is and will be quality dance music played by experts out to have a fun time. If you can handle that then Release is very likely to be one party you won’t want to end. ——————————————————————————– Reviews: Convergence @ Egg, and Hardware @ The Office, London, Saturday January 31st 2004 by Camden Nurse Five non – clubbing friends + the biggest hard dance event = carnage (for the friends at least). Since starting 4 years a go, Convergence (from that almighty Frantic Crew), has seen many a venues to call it’s own, but with Egg being it’s current resting place, it’s well worth the 15minute walk from King’s Cross station (time dependant on how fast / slow you walk). Reassuringly clean toilets, and yet another confusing, yet exciting venue layout, gave us 3 rooms of hard, bouncing, classic and stomping tune – age! Bring it on! An all round thumbs up displayed by the giant beams on customers’ faces, as the night showed no signs of stopping. It is easy to see that paying £20 on the door, £12 in advance and £10 on guest list can be justified, after all, Frantic has all the ingredients; it’s what you make it, so shut up, and dance! Glazby, Donna Birt, Ali Wilson, and Shaf De Bass were among the talent to entertain the strong crowd, keeping them on their toes throughout, whilst everyone’s favourite Thirsty DJs, took their well deserved place in the top room, providing us with chunky, funky sounds of the funky house beats. Satisfaction – you bet! Despite the crowds of clubbers on each level, it was both possible and easy to move around and a constant flow of people running from each room showed a huge amount of indecisiveness as to which room was the best to socialise / dance / drink in… it was such a close call – just the way we like it! Drinks were priced averagely (comparing to other London venues), and no shots or wine served in the ‘funky room’, meant another chance to stroll downstairs and bump into those you hadn’t seen in a while (or since last weekend at least). So, 3 of the non – clubbing friends went home in a £70 taxi at about 3 am, the other 2 stayed until the end and stood shivering in the train station (well done though guys, you made it!), and the rest decided to go in any way shape or form over to Frantic’s new after party Hardware at The Office (many listening to Gorfy on the radio 107.4 as they went), and my, my, what a treat they had in store: Elgreko, BK, Guffy, Donna Birt, Danny Gilligan, Shaf, and Lucy Fur, ‘Oh, Mr. P, you’re spoiling us!’, and free before 8am, what is the world coming to?! Okay, so many found it hard to stand up, dance or even communicate but it didn’t stop the numbers from stepping through the door, looking around and ‘having it!’ in any way they were able to display (all clean, of course). For many that remember Frantic’s good ‘ole days of Provocation, they were memories to be cherished, but by the turn out and effort put into Hardware, it sure showed that history could be repeated, and just as much fun could be had. After a long weekend of wreckage and exhausting antics for many, whilst driving / train –ing / walking / ski – ing/ home, you cannot help but wonder how Frantic do it. Despite the praise, the critics, the competition, they always pull in a crowd, have a bloody good line up, and have supporters from all over. So, if Frantic are ‘too commercial’ or whatever phrase you may choose to criticise them with, why on earth do they provide a constant, successful party for all, and show that the brains behind it all, is always one step ahead? CLUB INFO AND REVIEWS Review: Trade The Love Ball, Turnmils, London Trade’s Love Ball, lived up to expectations, in every sense of the word. The music and the crowd were fabulous; the queues and the drinks prices were horrendous. Musically the club as per usual delivered, my only disappointment being the lack of Malcolm Duffy to warm us up at the start, his place being taken by Wayne G. who played an extended set. Pete Wardman followed on with an electrifying, dynamic set which energised the whole club, and the night, (well afternoon really) was rounded off by Rachel Auburn, who, like Mae West, when she’s good she’s very good. Frankly I had doubted that anyone would be able to take things up a notch after Pete Wardman but Rachel did it. Overall, another wonderful experience from the Trade folk. Thanks. Btw: those interested in Trade’s early sounds should check out the listings below for the Trade Original event with some of the early residents of the club Malcolm Duffy (Original Trade Resident), Daz Saund (Original Trade Resident) & Dave Randall (Original Trade Guest DJ), “set to replay some of the best Trade music from the early years”. ——————————————————————————– Review: Ricochet, Egg. I’m not sure how many people came along from Trade, but there was a goodly number of people there having a great time to the chunky and bouncy tunes played by the likes of Don Grant, and Lisa Pin-up. I have to confess to not doing much dancing as I spent lots of time in the chill-out room just chatting to some of the lovely people I met there. It’s a shame that some clubs and promoters get too absorbed in their music policy and lose sight of the fact that a club is a social space for people, and that what makes the club enjoyable is as much the other people they get to meet as the music. Ricochet excelled in that department for me that night. Their next event at Egg will be in March. ——————————————————————————– Review: Release, The Nightingale, Birmingham Andy Farley’s new night, Release, got off to a flying start at the beginning of this month with over three hundred people attending the free re-opening party. Numbers have settled down to something more modest since and the club has brought it’s opening times forward by an hour, starting now at 8pm. The music is a superbly blended progression from tribal through to techno, with Farley demonstrating his mastery of the decks every time he plays. Having just got back from playing in the States, and with a burgeoning international diary there’s now talk of the club running monthly in March. However, it will be running on after Sundissential in Birmingham this coming Sunday, so we’ll see what happens then. ——————————————————————————– Sundissential: More News! “May you live in interesting times” is claimed to be an ancient Chinese curse and the times certainly are interesting for Sundissential, (See the January (2) newsletter for some recent background). The latest is the fairly inevitable closing of Afterssential, which failed to hold its own against the ever more popular Afters at Subway City. Afterssential has now been replaced by “Filth” a funky house effort starting at 3am Sunday mornings under the funkissential banner, at 9 Bar on Broad Street. It seems that this is going to target the more mainstream/commercial crowd, up for a bit of late-night partying. On top of that comes news of the latest new casualty in clubland, the voluntary receivership of Springwood Leisure, the Midlands based clubs and restaurants group, which also owns Zanzibar in Birmingham, and the premises occupied by Sundissential, (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/west_midlands/3486825.stm for info). Springwood claim that part of their problem stemmed from the hot Summer which reduced numbers going clubbing last year. Sundissential’s management are apparently unperturbed by this new twist, as they tell me that the premises will continue in operation even while the company is in receivership and beyond. This week on top of all this and their regular Saturday night event they have their forthcoming big splash at The Works to pull off on Sunday from 2pm. There’s talk of discounted tickets for those clubbers wanting to go to both events so check out the Sunnies website for details or come along on Saturday night. It looks like that was the last newsletter I have a copy of. Although the website indicated that there were later ones published in both 2004 and 2005 I don’t seem to have copies and they weren’t uploaded to the original site so were not captured by a web archiving service.
