DASSOS (OI)
Sad news reached me recently about Dassos, club promoter of the
OI skinhead events held in London, Manchester and Birmingham over
the past few years. He has been hospitalised for the past eight
months, during many of which he has been in a coma, following an
insulin overdose. He can be contacted by post through friends, (write
to 24 Helmshore Walk, Manchester M13 9TH) who will ensure that all
letters are passed to him. If people would like to visit him, they
can contact Jeremy on 07952 952081 who can pass on the hospital
details. I am told it would mean a lot to him to hear from people.

DANCE MUSIC MARKET
1. Yet more evidence of decline in the dance music market comes
from a story I heard from Gavin who’s been working out in Ibiza
this summer. He says that it is quiet this year and that the clubs
and bars there are having the worst summer for a long time.
2. Sundissential to re-launch Funkissential, (see forthcoming events
below). Having been developing their Funkisential brand, Sundissential
is preparing a re-launch in Leeds, the traditional home of their
hardest dance events, of a club event playing something a bit gentler/funkier.
Having reached the monotonous ferocity of a pneumatic drill, it
looks like hard house has now dug itself all the way back underground,
where it may well end up being buried. Come back Northern Soul,
all is forgiven!

CLUB HISTORY: SHERBET
Having started the ball rolling in collecting the history of some
influential clubs long closed but fondly remembered with Tin Tin’s,
in Birmingham, (IanM’s story is now up on the Tin Tin’s page by
the way), another club of a similar influential and somewhat legendary
ilk, is Sherbet. This ran in London, at The Soundshaft, on Sunday
afternoons, and was set up by DJing wizard, Pete Wardman, in the
mid-1990s (?). I believe the club ran for something like a year
or two, and closed around the time that DTPM got started at The
End. It was mixed, had a loyal following and a great atmosphere
I understand. So much so in fact that people continued the party
with “Family”, after it closed (see the 2Klub website
for info on Family). Sherbet issued at least one CD, mixed by PW,
copies of which must still be around.
So here goes again: Got any info. memories, stories, pics. music
on or from Sherbet? Let me have ’em and we’ll try to create a Sherbet
page.

EDDIE HALLIWELL
“Our CDs are mixed by DJs not computers”, says MixMag
proudly, possibly having a dig at some CD producers who select tarcks,
mix using a computer and slap a DJ’s name on the front. Yeah, O.K.
MixMag, but does the DJ choose the tracks? The latest issue of MixMag
features a new freebie CD mixed by Eddie Halliwell. This follows
on from the first of a few months ago, “Bosch”, which
Eddie was not that pleased with, as, of the tracks which were used,
only four were ones he had chosen. He couldn’t get permission from
the license-holders to use the others he wanted and the ones which
replaced them were not his choice. This new freebie, “next
level Bosch”, might be MixMag’s way of making up for that first
fiasco.

Next newsletter will be around mid-September, after I get back
from Ibiza. I’ll miss the Magna 7 event in Sheffield and lots of
others, so PLEASE continue to send your reviews and comments to
me to put into the next newsletter or on the website.

SIN:ERGY 12hr All-Nighter (10pm-10am) this Saturday 2 Rooms + Chillout
Zone, 12 Hours, 12 DJ’s
YOU DO NOT NEED A EUROPRIDE MARDIGRAS WRISTBAND! You won’t need a
wristband to enter Sin:ergy on Saturday night for the 12hr all-nighter
as our venue (Mutz Nutz) is on Princess Street, Manchester and NOT
within the Europride Events Zone.
WHAT ABOUT PARKING? As it’s the Europride BankHoliday weekend there
is a massive event in town on Saturday and Sunday along Canal Street/Bloom
Street, and as such parking right in the city centre will be at a
premium. We suggest that you park the other side of Piccadilly Gardens
(e.g off Oldham St), or one of the streets off Oxford Rd/The Mancunian
Way, and walk the last few hundred yards to Mutz Nutz. CAN
YOU GET IN ANY TIME BETWEEN 10pm & 10am? When you buy an advance
ticket you will have reserved entry anytime whilst Sin:ergy is open.
You will not however not be able to leave and re-enter the venue
without surrendering your ticket. A ticket is the only way to ensure
entry (if you prefer to pay on the door we suggest you arrive b4
midnight). If there is spare capacity we will of course be happy
to welcome people throughout the night up until 7am, e.g. if you
want to come to to us after another event (e.g. Uni-Challenge, which
has now cancelled it’s after-party event at The Ritz incidentally).

APOSTROPHES
And finally…. a plea for the poor old apostrophe, so widely abused
by club promoters. “DJ’s” is so widely mis-used to mean
more than one DJ that it’s becoming standard. Correct is “DJs”.
“DJ’s” (when DJ is used as a noun) means belonging to
the DJ, as in “The DJ’s set was wicked”. More than one
DJ? Move the apostrophe past the letter “s”. As in “Those
DJs’ sets were crap”.
Will now shuffle off back under the rock from which I emerged.
Love,
Jonathan
