Come Fly with us! Take off to Ibiza with 2Klub on Oct 1st, and be welcomed aboard your flight by our very own (& that extra ‘bit’ special) Helga the stewardess from Air Cunnilingus! After your flight (down the stairs!) you’ll be asked to present your passport 2Klub at the Check-in Desk (and don’t forget that your Membership Card entitles you to a £2 discount). There’ll be plenty of opportunity to purchase Duty-free (that’s glowsticks, 3-D Specs, and Ice Pops!) before entering Ibiza through the double doors and sunning yourself in the company of hundreds of fab 2Klubbers! Be prepared to wear your shorts, Speedo’s, bikinis, sarongs, and even G-Strings (for the brave!) as this month you’re gonna get all wet and sticky!!! AND, to show our appreciation, all those in costume only pay £8 on the door. We also have a private changing area between 10-11pm for us all to get changed, so put yourselves in Helga’s capable hands (as many sailors have) and lets go party Ibiza style! | 2Klub: Ibiza Summer Friday October 1st All-night, 10pm-6am Rob Tissera – A main resident at Sundissential (Ibiza, and North), Rob plays a terrific blend of Trance and uplifting House. Rob is our Ibiza Summer guest DJ and plays from 12am ’till 2am. Big Brett – Brett is one of the best and most consistent performers you’ll find on the DJ circuit. He has as much fun on his side of the decks as you will on the dance floor; and be prepared for him to grab you by the short and curlies ‘coz you’ll be on that dancefloor from 2am to 4am! Mike Allan – ‘King of the decks’ at Strangeways, then Dancetaria, this is Mike at his best; the 2Klub music policy is simple, it’s about giving our Members what they want. Mike plays from 4am – 6am. 2Klub: IBIZA Summer
Our Ibiza Summer night on October the 1st was one of the best 2Klub’s yet. It was great to see those of you in costume (goggles, snorkel, sombreros, OK it may not be Ibiza but it was fun!), and now we’ve changed the club layout so that the DJ’s are on centre stage Andy K, Rob Tissera and Brett really got the buzz going.
We closed at 4am, despite having a licence and DJ’s to play on ’till 6am (and we were all up for it too!), at the request of the police and licencing authorities. Don’t worry though, we’ve met up with them since and have been assured that all is now OK. Sorry about that too – we’ve reduced the ticket price to £8 on Nov 5th so come next time and let us make up for it!

Last Event Burning 2Klub on November 5th proved to be more exciting than any of us had anticipated. Planned to take place at V’Bar, we discovered at the last minute that they had lost their entertainment license, and we had to find another venue at very short notice. Mike, at North stepped in to save the day, and with only hours to spare 2Klub was transferred to North. Every cloud has a silver lining they say, and that crisis has led to our securing North as 2Klub’s future home. From now on 2Klub will be held at North, (below Afflecks Palace on the corner of Tib and Church Streets) north of Piccadilly Gardenson the first Friday of every month. This also helps solve the parking problems we had at V’Bar, as there is a car park adjacent the club. Despite all the behind the scenes problems Big Brett, Ian M and Andy Farley delivered a powerhouse of a night. There were some teething problems concerning door staff and the cloakroom which have been rectified and there will be no restrictions on 2Klubmembers taking off their shirts! More Benefits for 2Klub Members Our move to North has enabled us to negotiate reciprocal benefits for our members. Henceforth your 2Klub membership card will entitle you to attend events held at North (such as the monthly Sundissential and Manumission nights) at members’ prices. For details on events being held at North phone 0161-839-1989. 2Klub Evolves and Grows 2Klub`s membership is nearing 700. In addition, starting next year, we will be offering a new night at North on the third Friday of every month called Tranceport. This is a night for those who like their music, deep, emotional and uplifting, playing the latest in Trance but the way it | used to be played before it became cheesey. Tranceport brings a new resident DJ to the 2Klub line-up: Steve Reynolds. Steve has been playing and mixing long before 1999 and “The Summer of Trance”. His music is well thought out and his mixes carefully crafted. We promise you that Tranceport will definitely NOT be just another club night jumping on the Trance bandwagon. Next Event Our next night will be at North on Friday December 3rd. from 10pm to 4am featuring2Klubresidents: Big Brett (Glasshouse) Ian M (Trade) and introducing new talented DJs: Gareth North Craig Lee Colin Wilkinson Chris Graham Andy Convery After warming us up in the main room these guys will keep the second room pumping with top tunes. The theme, as posted on our website 2Klub.com for the past two months, is WINTERWONDERLAND, so get out yer whites and icicles. Prices Members/Costumed/NUS: £6 with flyer Others: £8 with flyer PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO BRING YOUR FLYER – IT ENTITLES YOU TO A £2 REDUCTION WHICH IS SHOWN IN THE PRICES ABOVE. Spare flyers are enclosed with the newsletter for your friends, but if you need more just give us a call. Contact details and more information on the reverse. |
A Tale of Two Partners by Jonathan I bumped into a clubbing mate recently in Leeds. The last time I’d seen him he was radiant. He had met this fantastic girl and they were both in love. They spent every spare moment with each other and talked on the phone every day when they were apart. When I saw him recently he looked forlorn and the sparkle, which had been dancing in his eyes the previous time, had gone. When I asked him how his girlfriend was he told me that they’d split up. “She felt that we were spending too much time together, and she was neglecting her friends.” Ever the one to give unasked for advice, I suggested that maybe they should try to spend some time with each others’ social group: “Maybe you can spend some time with her, and her friends, so you get to know them better – and they get to know you – and she can similarly spend some time with you and your friends.” Ah! If only it was that easy. He explained that her friends are all supporters of club promoter X who runs one club in Leeds, while his friends are all supporters of promoter Y, who runs another club in Leeds. It was then I began to appreciate the depth of the division that exists within the clubbing community in that city. In spite of that, Leeds is seen by many to be improving club-wise while Manchester is regarded as a shadow of its former self. Many of us who experienced The Hacienda and the glory days of not long ago know the cause to be gangs and violence, which really boils down to greed, arrogance, and intolerance. What has happened in both cities, is, to me, what clubbing is NOT about. 2Klub’s name says that this is a place for clubbers. What then are clubbers and clubbing about? Clubbing is different things for different people. For me, after years of clubbing (of a sort), on the gay club scene, I found the emphasis there to be first on sex, shagging and pulling, and second or third on friendship. Discovering an alternative clubbing scene of people for whom one’s sexuality, age, looks or inability to dance (a definite problem for me) were not grounds for rejection or abuse was a revelation. My view on what clubbing can be is summarised by 2Klub’sslogan: Freedom, Fun & Friendship. Of course some people say that the friendships made by clubbers are synthetic and temporary; they don’t last to the next week – to which I’d say that for some people that’s true while for others it isn’t. I certainly know many people who have formed deep and lasting friendships through clubbing. One can use clubbing in lots of different | ways, either as short-term escapism or as something more long-lasting and meaningful. It’s up to us. Returning for a moment to the situation in Leeds, it seems sad, to say the least, that the differences between two promoters should affect so harmfully, the relationship of my mate and his girlfriend. Surely there is something wrong there, and I would think that some of the blame for the divisiveness rests with the two promoters together. It’s up to the promoters of the clubs to decide whether or not their differences are to be imposed on their friends and acquaintances, and it’s a bit self-indulgent for them to do so. At such times feelings run high, one feels aggrieved and angry and it’s tempting to draw one’s friends into the dispute. It’s a bit like a marriage separation: “Choose sides” each partner requires, and of course sides get chosen. But, in most cases, there’s rights and wrongs on both sides in a break-up. Each partner is of course tempted to play up his or her rights and downplay their wrongs, doing the reverse for the other partner, and the gossip mill helps magnify the problem. It’s a temptation which can be resisted, by both clubbers and promoters. After all a club can have great DJs and a superb venue but fundamentally clubs and clubbing are what we as individuals make of them. Jeremy Leaves 2Klub Jeremy and I started 2Klub in July and he has worked extremely hard to help make it a success. At the beginning of this month he announced that he had left 2Klub and started work as an independent club promoter. His new event, Utopia, will be held at North on Friday, 10th. December from 10pm to 4:30am with Guest DJ Rob Tissera (Sundissential) and Big Brett (2Klub). I wish him every success. 2Klub Membership We’re increasing the benefits of2Klub and have lots of new ideas in the pipeline, so we’ve enclosed spare application forms for you to sponsor a new member. Best wishes for the Festive Season I wish all my clubbing mates the very best of health and happiness over the festive season. Works parties, Xmas parties, Hannukah parties, Millenium parties and the rest – it’s going to be a looooong month. So don’t forget to get some rest because I want to see all of you back here hale and hearty next year. Have a great time and lots of fun, and take lots of photos to bring to the next 2Klub, (see below). Your club 2Klub is a club for clubbers and we want it to be especially your club. Some of the guys in the second room tonight are both excellent DJs and 2Klub members. When we say we want to encourage new talent we mean it – honestly, it’s not promoters’ bullshit. So, please, if you think you’ve got talent and you’d like to play at 2Klub, then send us a tape or CD: 2Klub. PO Box 1834, Leamington Spa CV32 6YE Another thing we’d like you to do is bring your clubbing photos with you next time. We particularly want to see your New Year’s Eve photos. We’ll display them in the club – Best Photo and Most Outrageous Photo each get £25 prizes! – and published in the next newsletter. What’s in a Name? Some people have asked where the club’s name came from. When the club was being planned over a hundred names were thought of, including Eden, Emotion, Euphoria, Krakatoa, Bounce, etc. etc. etc. I did a bit of market research which revealed that either they’d been done to death years before and sounded cheesey, or people just didn’t like them. So it was back to the drawing board and I tried “2Klub”. People generally either liked it or at least didn’t dislike it and thought it sounded up to date. However, there’s a bit more to the name than that for me. First of all I like playing with words so all the possibilities of Live2Klub, Love2Klub etc. came to mind, including the French version: Je club, 2Klub, Il club, Nous club. | Then there’s the 2. Normally, in clubland it’s almost impossible for more than two people to have a conversation at once, but two people socialising, rather than one person posing, is what is important for most people about clubbing. “It’s not about Me; it’s about Us”. So why the “K”? When I was a kid in school they called that letter of the alphabet the “Kicking K”. Ks are harder than Cs. If our music’s anything it’s hard and Kicking. So, now you know. As we approach the year 2000, (2K), 2Klub, says it all for me about our kind of clubbing. Next Event Our next night will be at North on Friday February 4th from 10pm to 4am featuring, in the Main Room: Alex Kidd Fergie (Trade) – 4 Hour set And in the Second Room, more of the 2Klub DJ pack. Welcome Congratulations! Your application for membership of 2Klub has been approved and your membership card is enclosed. I look forward to seeing you at our events next year. Membership has its benefits. Apart from reduced prices on the door and on advanced tickets, you also get members prices to other events held at North such as Sundissential and Manumission nights. More benefits will be announced soon. Apologies for the size of the card which is a holdover from our early days. Members have complained that they’re too large and new cards will be issued in the new year, but hang on to this one for the time being. Please keep in touch and pass on your comments. People already have. For instance there was a lot of comment about the lack of contrast between the music styles in the two rooms last Friday. This has already been passed on to the relevant DJs and will be corrected next time when the second room will definitely offer a more varied mix of tunes. Using your feedback, new up-and-coming DJs are being given Hard House main room sets starting in February. To keep in touch, see me in the club or: E-mail me at: Jonathan @ 2Klub.com Mail: 2Klub. Dress Code Ric sent me an e-mail recently in which he asked about the dress code at the club. “P.S. what is the dress code exactly cos, i saw a guy get turned away for having rockports on (a wise rule to keep out the townies!) but 10 mins after in the club i saw an entire group of people wearing trainers. This doesn’t bother me cos i enjoy getting dressed up for a night out anyway and can’t stand rockports but i have some friends who would love the music you play and would fit into the atmosphere perfectly but they enjoy wearing sports wear/trainers etc. if you could let me know more accurately what is accepted and what isn’t I will pass the information on to my friends so that they can avoid any disappointment on the door!” Basically the door staff aim to encourage people who: a). have a prejudice-free ethos towards clubbing. b). don’t pose a threat to the safety or well-being of the people inside the club or to the security staff themselves. They won’t let in people who are drunk, aggressive, wear Rockport style shoes, and checked or labelled shirts. That said, the ethos at 2Klub is for people to come and be themselves, so we don’t like to put limitations on people’s self-expression and we encourage people to come in a costume that reflects the theme of the night. The door staff (who we don’t employ), have agreed that smart casual wear and sports wear including trainers (which are comfortably practical for a lot of clubbers to wear) are OK, and that there’s no problem with people taking off their shirts if they want to inside the club. I hope that helps explain the dress code more clearly, but if you or your friends have any more questions let me know and I’ll try to clarify things for you. Introduction 2Klub 2Klub is a new dance club event in Manchester, being held on the First Friday of each month. We’re a mixed (gay/straight event) organised by gay and straight clubbers for clubbers. We’ve been going since the summer and play uplifting Hard House. Our DJs have included Ian M (Trade) who is now resident with us, Rob Tissera (Sundisential), Andy Farley (Sundissential) and Big Brett from the GlassHouse in Leeds. We’re holding our next event at North, a club below Afflecks Palace, in the Northern Quarter of central Manchester, near Piccadilly Gardens and the gay village. We’re organised as a members club, though non-members can still get in – they just pay more. Membership is available by post (fill in the form on the reverse and post it to us) or through our website. Apart from lower prices members get discounts on other events held at North such as Sundissential and Manumission nights, as well as a regular newsletter. Whether you’re gay or straight there are two types of clubs – shagging and socialising, (Hands In The Air Vs Legs In The Air?). We’re a HITA club. The emphasis is definitely on having fun rather than posing, cliques or Attitude. If you fancy a fun night out where you can relax and have a great time to energising music come and join us.
